On December 26, 2020, Serendib 1.0 was launched, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s space exploration history. Organized by the Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Arthur C. Clarke Institution for Modern Technologies, this project involved 31 university students from across the country. The high-altitude balloon reached an impressive altitude of over 33,000 meters, collecting valuable atmospheric data and setting a new precedent for aerospace endeavors in Sri Lanka.
Building on the success of Serendib 1.0, Serendib 2.0 aimed to push the boundaries further. Launched on December 26, 2021, this project tested components for the ORAGAN Cubesat satellite, in partnership with the Serendib 2.0 high-altitude balloon project.
Both Serendib 1.0 and 2.0 projects have played a pivotal role in promoting space exploration and development in Sri Lanka. They have inspired a new generation of students and professionals to engage in aerospace research and innovation. As SEDS Sri Lanka continues to embark on ambitious projects, the legacy of Serendib 1.0 and 2.0 serves as a testament to the community’s unwavering dedication. Serendib 3.0 is set to kickstart within the year 2024.
