Operation: Sky-Lead

The Sky-Lead project, initiated by the Aeronautical Division of SEDS Sri Lanka, aims to construct a short runway system for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). This project is significant as it marks the beginning of a new era in Sri Lankan UAVs, fostering an alliance of students passionate about aeronautics. The goal is to provide infrastructure for flying machine developers and enthusiasts, introduce new technologies, and pave the way for further university projects and technological inventions. The project is planned to be implemented in phases, with the initial phase focusing on proposing the concept and constructing the runway, followed by the construction of UAVs and other related infrastructure facilities. The site selection for the runway construction will be near the Colombo region to ensure easy accessibility for all.

SEDS Sri Lanka, established in 2018, has grown into a massive organization with multiple university chapters and divisions, each focusing on different aspects of space exploration and aeronautics. The Aeronautical Division, under the guidance of experienced founders and supervisors, aims to elevate aeronautics in Sri Lanka and encourage students to pursue careers within the field

The Sky-Lead project aligns with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including industry innovation, quality education, decent work, economic growth, gender equality, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities, peace, justice, and strong institutions. It aims to promote sustainable development, enhance scientific research, provide inclusive education, create employment opportunities, and foster international partnerships.

The budget for the project includes costs for concrete pavement UAV runway, asphalt pavement UAV runway, and UAV control system, with the total budget subject to variations based on site conditions and unforeseen price fluctuations. Sponsorship opportunities are available at different levels, including Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze, each offering various benefits such as promotional advertisements, company logo displays, and acknowledgments in media appearances.

The team behind the project includes Former Chairs, Founders, and Senior Project supervisors of SEDS Sri Lanka, along with members of various divisions and chapters. The project is an example of collaboration and dedication among students from diverse educational backgrounds, working together to advance the field of aeronautics in Sri Lanka, and is set to be initiated within the year 2024.
